The Preparator’s Field Guide (PFG)
is intended to be a printed, visual reference for preparators, art handlers, and technicians. It will compile field-tested techniques, shared knowledge, and practical solutions into clear, illustrated formats. Inspired by vintage technical manuals and field guides, it is being developed as both a training tool and a quick-reference for work in the field.

Preparator knowledge is often learned on the job and rarely documented. The PFG is being developed to reduce gatekeeping, preserve working knowledge, and support the next generation of preparators.

Currently in development, the PFG will draw on contributions from experienced professionals to address common questions, challenges, and techniques in museum work—from glossaries and hardware samples to packing and rigging methods.
